Hello, Can anyone tell me what a file turns into when it becomes deleted?

I know the PC runs on 1's and 0's it is only what it becomes is another zero. Yet more specifically what is this process called other than deletion or the synonyms of the word 'deletion'? More inside the PC what really happens is...? You fill in the elipsis, please.
