Can you make totaly immersive virtual reality with electric stimulation on brain using electrodes?

Is it possible to recreate sensory experiences and make video games that use the same technology as the matrix except It's non-invasive and is more like video games instead of a large city. Would It be possible to manipulate the Central Nervous System to induce these sensory experiences. For instance we recieve all input from are senses as nerve impulses. Could a machine make artificially stimulated nerve impulses and The Central Nervous system would process them allowing a user to interact with a virtual world. Any neuroligists or backyard scientists that have a pretty good understanding of the brain. Is It possible to manipulate the brain like this? If so what procdure wowuld be nessecary?
