Why does my cat meow when we're doing the dishes?

Whenever our dishwasher is being loaded or unloaded, or whenever there is a clanking noise from silverware or dishes, our cat meows and whines till we stop. Usually she is a quiet kitty. I've asked around and can't find any other cat owners who've heard of a cat doing that before. Anybody heard of this?
